Yoga Class Club: December 2024
Hey Everybody,
Welcome to December in our Yoga Class Club!
I know that toward the later part of this month, many of us will have our hands full with holiday commitments! But my hope is that the yoga practices in our “club” this month will provide us with some extra grounding energy to help us stay centered to through the busy-ness. 🎄
This month’s yoga class selection includes a well-rounded mix of gentle, active, and strong practices, as well as two quick 10-minute flows to help you fit some movement in on your busiest days. Our specialty class this month focuses on hip stability – a wonderful way to work on your stability/balance skills in some new and fresh ways (both movement-wise and in life!) – especially as the year draws to a close.
A few other reminders about our Yoga Class Club:
–Please feel free to branch out from this class “club” and take any other classes from the greater library that you like (of course!). But just know that this December selection represents what I see as a balanced overall month-long practice.
–Also feel free to substitute any other class from the library (or from any other yoga teacher if you also take classes elsewhere, for that matter!) for one of the ones I’ve included in this club if I happen to choose a class this month that isn’t a good fit for your body or your practice. If you’re using the Accountability Checklist (scroll down to find it), you can jot down your substitutions there. :)
Enjoy this month’s Yoga Class Club selection, and I look forward to practicing with you during this reflective and festive time of year!
–Jenni
P.S. Remember that I’m always here in our community forum if you have any comments, questions, or feedback about the “Club”!
Warm-Up Flows: 10-minute yoga/movement snacks
–Take each class 1x/week this month
-
Move Your Spine & Wake Up Your Core
This yoga snack starts with a thread the needle sequence, then lights up the glutes with some bridge pose work, and then moves into the coolest standing variation of cat/cow! I hope you enjoy lighting up your day with this quick jolt of movement!
-
Glutes & Tree Pose Surprise
This whole body flow practice features a sneaky focus on the glutes (a.k.a. the /posterior and lateral hips). And the entry we practice into tree pose is novel and creative, and a great new transition for your brain to play with!
Gentle yoga practices – when you want to move, but without a lot of effort
–Take each class once this month (and more if you need it)
-
Gentle & Restorative Hip-Opening Practice (39 min)
This slow, gentle practice will leave you with a new experience of your hips. We start with a short series of gentle, mindful hip-focused movements, and then we move into a relaxing sequence of some of my favorite, longer-held, restorative hip-openers. Get out your soft props (just a bolster or big pillow and a blanket will do!) and tune into your hips!
-
Keep It Low Mellow Flow 3 (34 min)
I’m a big fan of the sequence in this class! We start with some attention on passive-and-gently-active thoracic extension. Then we move into a low-to-the-ground flow that links together a long and intentional set of poses that target the feet, hips, and spine. I hope you enjoy this mellow practice as much as I do!
Active yoga practices – we flow and connect to our breath, but the challenge level is moderate
Take each class at least 2x this month
-
Integrated Core Yoga Class (46 min)
Enjoy this active (and kind of fiery 🔥), creative practice that will tune you into your core in a whole new way! Instead of focusing on the core in in isolated manner (e.g. crunches, planks), in this class, our theme is to integrate our core work into larger, whole body movements. This class features some of my favorite ways to target the core – and all woven into a fun flow sequence!
-
Hip-Opening Active Flow (39 min)
This might be my favorite hip-opening class that’s on the active side! There’s a lot of novelty woven into this flow, and we truly do target our hips from all directions: anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral. This class starts with a mellow reclined sequence, but then moves into a fun, sustained hip flow.
-
Shoulder Fun Yoga Flow (39 min)
This playful practice will move your whole body, but it has a special focus on targeting the upper body/shoulders – both in open and closed chain movements. This sequence also involves some potent thoracic spine rotation mobility work – but it doesn’t feel like work because it’s all part of a fun flow!
Strong flows (optional)– when we really want to level up the challenge!
Take each class 2x this month if your body wants a more fiery practice
-
Evil Blanket Class (33 min)
This fun class challenges us to control our movements as our hands or feet slide across the floor on a yoga blanket (or towel, wash cloth, paper plates, etc.!) I sequenced several complementary moves together into an intentional flow. I had a lot of fun creating this class, and I hope you have fun practicing to it!
-
Vigorous Vinyasa Flow 5 (43 min)
This is a great and challenging practice that’s themed around a cool transition between navasana (boat pose) and pigeon pose. I’d just make sure that you’re comfortable in traditional pigeon pose as a suggestion for taking this class! (Because we utilize our pigeon pose mobility in this fun flow.)
Specialty class (optional)– a yoga class with an extra specific focus
Take this class 1 or more times this month if this specialty focus feels relevant for your body!
-
Hip Stability Flow (42 min)
This is a terrific class to take if you’re interested in challenging your hip stability and also exposing your hips and lower body to some new and novel loading! Plus, we use a yoga block in one of my favorite ways in this practice!
